E. Elmgren passed the examination for the certificate of proficiency in the Theory of Land Surveying of the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1883 and the next year was admitted as a land surveyor in the colony. In September 1883 a paper by him on "Form of cross-section of a channel for constant velocity of water at different levels" was read before the members of the South African Philosophical Society in Cape Town by John G. Gamble*, and published in the society's Transactions (1881-1883, Vol. 3, pp. 55-60). Elmgren was not a member of the society.
