J. Clement was a member of the South African Society of Electrical Engineers, which flourished briefly in Johannesburg from 1897 to 1899. At the society's meeting in April 1898 he read a paper on "Mine signalling".
Clement was also an associate of the Chemical and Metallurgical Society of South Africa in 1899, but no longer after the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902).
