'Mr. Chevallier' donated 'stone implements, perforated shells, broken bones of animals, and a rude drawing on stone of human figures', from a cave explored by him at the mouth of the Knysna River, to the South African Museum in 1871-1872. He was probably Edgcumbe Chevallier, who died at Wynberg in 1876 at the age of 48, and who was married to Clara Elizabeth, born Abethell, with whom he had six children.
