T. E. Allerton was the author of an article entitled "Hailstorm at Charlestown, Natal, October 24th, 1906", which was published in the Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society (1907, Vol. 33, pp.181-182). A plate shows hailstones weighing up to 560 g and with circumferences of up to 113 by 138 mm.
He was Thomas Edwin Allerton, son of Augustus Allerton and his wife Emma Jane, born Higman, and formerly a steward on the steamship Hesperides. In 1906 his brother Edward, who resided in Charlestown, requested that Thomas be allowed to be paid off in Durban, after which the latter probably went to Charlestown for some time. When he died in 1969 he was survived by his wife, Theresa Maria Allerton (born Schwarzendahl), and three children.
