Harold Edwin Bly Brooking was the son of Edwin William Brooking and his wife Ann Eliza Bly. He resided in East London when he presented a valuable collection of fishes, including freshwater species, to the South African Museum, Cape Town, in 1908. He sent additional specimens to the museum in 1909.
Brooking was a member of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science by 1906. During 1907/8 he was honorary secretary of the Association's local committee in East London. He was no longer a member in 1911.
Brooking was married to Elizabeth Munro. After their divorce he married Maud Beatrice Ely, who survived him.
