J.H. Hampton, mining manager in Malaysia, was the manager of the failed Shangai Tin Mining Company. In 1886 he delivered a lecture on "Tin deposits of the State of Perak, Straits Settlements" before the Mining Association and Institute of Cornwall, United Kingdom. The next year he published a paper on "Cassiterite of the Straits Settlements" in the Mineralogical Magazine (1887). In 1899 he was a member of the Geological Society of South Africa and contributed a paper, "On the occurrence of tin", to its Transactions (1898-1899, Vol. 4, pp. 37-40).
