William Henry Auret was the son of Abraham Auret, draughtsman in the office of the Surveyor-General of the Cape Colony, and his wife Anna Carolina Frederika Itzen. On 1 January 1861 he married Elizabeth Anne Eleanor Pritchard. A few years later he was the civil commissioner at Paarl. In 1867 Auret was awarded a prize of 10 pounds sterling for the best collection of medicinal plants, with a descriptive catalogue, submitted to the government commission charged with selecting articles to be displayed at the Paris Exhibition that year.
