Born: 19 September 1869, Cape Town, South Africa.
Died: 5 May 1949, Cape Town, South Africa.

Gerard Henry Herman (also known as Gerhard Henry Herman), civil servant, was the son of Johannes Zacharias Herman and Maria Johanna van Breda. He studied at the South African College, Cape Town, from 1887 to 1890 but does not seem to have obtained any qualifications. He joined the civil service of the Cape Colony in January 1893 as a fifth clerk, rising gradually through the ranks of the Public Works Department to clerk in 1905, but was pensioned off on 1 January 1909. He was married in 1923 to Magdalena Christina Maria Biesman Simons, but they had no surviving children.

During 1906 G.H. Herman, presumably him, accompanied Robert M. Lightfoot* of the South African Museum to Saldanha Bay where they collected over 400 insects for the museum.
