J. Crosly was involved in the recruitment of labourers in Zululand during 1905-1910. He also owned a store at Mkuze, but in 1911 applied for permission to move it to Madolo Ridge [not identified]. During these years he lived on the farm Mooiplaats [not identified]. He collected snails in Zululand for H.C. Burnup*. One of his finds was a rare species which occurs only in Zululand and which was named Curvella croslyi in his honour by Burnup in 1905.
