Baxter, Dr James W (veterinary science)

James W. Baxter qualified as a veterinarian (MRCVS, London) in 1894. On 21 October 1896 he entered the Natal Civil Veterinary Department as one of four veterinarians appointed on the recommendation of the Stock Commission to assist in the control of rinderpest in Natal. He was co-author, with W. Stapley*, of a critical review of Dr Robert Koch's proposed measures against the disease, submitted to his superiors and subsequently published in the prestigious British journal Veterinary Record in 1897. Baxter resigned from the Department in October 1898 and probably returned to the United Kingdom.
