John Wood was a member of the Geological Society of South Africa by 1897, but his membership had lapsed by 1899. He and A. Ortlepp published a Map of the Rand Goldfields (London, 1898) on a scale of 2500 feet to the inch (1:30 000). A Transvaal edition of the map was published in Johannesburg in 1899 on a very similar scale of 200 Cape roods to the inch (1:29750). It contained detailed mining and cadastral information.
This John Wood should not be confused with a contemporary John Wood*, who was a naturalist and fossil collector at East London.
