Walsh, Capt Lionel Henry (poisonous plants)

Born: 1880, Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Died: 29 August 1918, France.
Active in: SA.

Lionel Henry Walsh, chemist, was the son of Albert Walsh and his wife Alice Jane. He passed the matriculation examination of the University of the Cape of Good Hope in 1898. He was the author of South African poisonous plants; being notes on South African plants poisonous to stock, with particulars of symptoms and treatment (Cape Town, 1909, 54pp). This booklet represents an early attempt to cover all the indigenous plants known to cause stock losses. It gives both vernacular and botanical names.

Walsh died while on active service in the London Regiment in France during World War I (1914-1918). He was awarded the Military Cross (MC) and the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM). He was not married.
