Augusto de Almeida Teixeira, a Portuguese naval officer, was the son of Francisco Maria Almeida Teixeiro and his wife Amélia Carlota de Almeida. He was the director of the Campos
Rodrigues Observatory, Lorenzo Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique, in 1913 when
he became a member of the South African Association for the Advancement of
Science, and was still there in 1918. The association held its annual congress
in Maputo in 1913 and for this occasion he prepared two papers. One of these,
written in Portuguese, was translated into English with the title 'Data for the
study of the climate of Lourenco Marques' (33 pp.) and was based on
meteorological data for the years 1910-1913. The other dealt with 'Determination
of the latitude and longitude of the pillar of the transit instrument of the Campos
Rodrigues Observatory'. The next year Teixeira, R.T.A. Innes* and W.M.
Worssell* collaborated to determine the 'Difference in longitude between
Johannesburg and Lourenco Marques' (Circular
of the Union Observatory, Johannesburg, 1914, Vol. 15, p. 109).
As a naval officer Teixeira took part in various military campaigns from 1909, particularly during World War I (1914-1918). From 1919 to 1929 he was Port Captain at Leixöes (near Oporto, Portugal). He served as commander of various ships and was decorated several times. He was married to Mario do Céu de Querios Montenegro, with whom he had three children.
