F. von Thümen was the principal collaborator in German South
West Africa (now Namibia) of the German colonial meteorological network, at
least until the colony was conquered by South African forces during World War I
(1914-1918). Towards the end of the war he published Zusammenstellung der von den meteorologischen Stationen in DSWA
gemachten Niederschlagsmessungen 1898-1914 (Collection of rainfall records
made at meteorological stations in German South West Africa, 1898-1914; Windhoek,
1918, 19 pp.)
Von Thümen may have been the son of the German botanist
Freiher Felix K.A.E.J. von Thümen (1832-1892).
