J.P. Rothwell of Johannesburg collected stone artefacts on the Witwatersrand during the years around 1890. In March 1890, while on a visit to London, he presented "several palaeolithic implements including a ball of quartz" to the British Museum (Natural History). He wrote to the museum again in February and July 1893, giving details of further discoveries of stone balls and mentioning that he had met another local collector, George Leith* of Pretoria. In March 1894 more implements and another stone ball from him were presented to the museum by his friend J. Drummond Robertson while on a visit to London.
The British Museum currently lists seven objects against his name: three handaxes, two flakes, one cleaver, and one ball.
