S. Ready was superintendent of Midlands Hospital in Graaff Reinet in 1886 and a meteorological observer there for the Meteorological Committee of the Cape of Good Hope from 1882 to 1899. During these years a summary of his observations was published annually in the Committee's Report. In 1897 his station, with many others, was classified as a second order meteorological station. During 1899 his other duties kept him so busy that he was unable to continue his observations, with the result that his returns for that year were incomplete and his station was discontinued. He was, however, allowed to retain the instruments with which the committee had supplied him, as he had been a regular observer for more than five years.
