Lionel Hargreaves, son of George Lockhart and his wife Matilda, was also known as Herbert Edward Lockhart or Herbert Edward Hargreaves. He was married to Mary Lockhart and was survived by his second wife, Dorothy Blanche Hargreaves, born Boggs. In 1917 they lived at Krantzkloof (now Kloof, near Pinetown) in Natal, where he was a flower grower. In that year both became foundation members of the South African Biological Society. Both were interested in entomology and Lionel wished to exchange species of KwaZulu-Natal for those from the Transvaal and Cape Province. Lionel collected mainly butterflies. Most of his collection was bought by A.J.T. Janse*. Some of his specimens are now in the Ditsong National Museum of Natural History, Pretoria.
