J. McBlaine was a member of the provisional committee that organised the foundation of the South African Society of Electrical Engineers in 1897. In February 1898 he read a paper on "lightning" before the society. It was subsequently published in the local technical and commercial journal Machinery.

He is probably the same person as James McBlain, who was appointed as electrical engineer in the Public Works Department of Kenya in September 1914.
