H.F. Lofts was an associate of the Chemical and metallurgical Society of South Africa. On 17 December 1898 he read a paper before the society on "The assay of by-products". It was published in the Proceedings (Vol. 2, pp. 487-492) and elicited quite some discussion (pp. 576-579, 601). Ten years later he was still an associate, living overseas, of the now renamed Chemical, Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa. A paper by him on "Cyanidation in the Malay states" was published in the society's Journal (Vol. 8, pp. 340-342) in 1908.
