Josina Christina Letty (born Lindenberg) was the daughter of Jan Jacob Cornelis Lindenberg, an appothecary and attorney at Worcester, and his wife Susanna Christina Heldsinger. Josina first married David Johannes de Vaal Leibrandt, with whom she had six children. Her second marriage, in 1894, was to Walter Edward Letty of Greenwich, United Kingdom. The first of five children of the latter marriage was Cythna Lindenberg Letty, well-known botanical artist. The family resided in Standerton in 1895, moved to Estcourt, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1899 and returned to Standerton in 1904. At the outbreak of World War I (1914-1918) Walter enlisted, but did not return to South Africa after the war. He died in France. When he left South Africa in 1914 Josina and her children moved to Pretoria.
Between 1897 and 1914 Josina compiled and illustrated two journals. The two volumes are now in the Mary Gunn Library of the National Botanical Institute, Pretoria. In 1989 seven flower paintings from these volumes were selected and published in the form of 1000 numbered portfolios of prints.
