H. Kestner, civil engineer, was an active member of the Transvaal Institute of Mechanical Engineers during 1905-1910. He contributed three papers to the institute's Journal during this time, dealing with "Ferro-concrete" (1905/6, Vol. 4), "Concrete for outlining of mine shafts" (1906/7, Vol. 5), and "Mine drainage plants, with special reference to high lift centrifugal pumps" (1908/9, Vol. 7). In 1906 he read a paper on "Theoretical investigations regarding ferro-concrete" at the annual congress of the South African Association for the Advancement of Science in Kimberly. He was not a member of the association. The paper was published in the Report of the meeting (pp. 386-400).
