Anton Jelinek (or Jellinek, Tellinck), an Austrian horticulturalist, was attached to the expedition around the world of the Austrian frigate Novara in 1857-1859. This important scientific expedition collected mainly ethnographic material. One of its other members was the geologist Ferdinand von Hochstetter*. Unfortunately there were interpersonal problems between members of the scientific staff. The ship sailed from Trieste on 30 April 1857 and visited the Cape for some three weeks in October that year. Members of the expedition made excursions in the neighbourhood of Cape Town and into the interior to Paarl, Stellenbosch and Genadendal, during which Jellinek collected lichens. His specimens were described by von Krempelhuber in 1870.

In 1859 Jelinek was appointed to advise on the botanical aspects of the gardens of Miramare castle, built on the Adriatic coast near Trieste, Italy, during 1856-1860 for the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian.
