Miss Mary Holmes lived in Port Elizabeth in 1886 and 1887, where she collected marine and terrestrial shells. She became a member of the Eastern Province Naturalists' Society in December 1886. At its annual meeting in January the next year she was awarded a silver medal, and free membership, for her splendid "competition collection" of marine and land shells.
