J. Pakenham Hamilton presumably visited South Africa in 1891. He published two papers relating to its mines in the Transactions of the Institute of Mining Engineers (Newcastle, England; 1891-1892, Vol. 3): "Witwatersrand goldfields, Transvaal, South Africa" (pp. 857-873), and "Notes on the Natal coalfields" (pp. 874-890). The first paper contained a description of the geology and mining on the Witwatersrand, including the Boksburg coalfield, as well as the gold output for 1887-1891 and the cost of mining in 1891. The second included figures for the annual coal output in Natal for 1889-1891. No other publications by him are known.
