Mr Halter was a carpenter, waggon maker, gardener, and eager collector of insects at the Moravian mission at Enon, some 60 km inland from Algoa Bay. In 1829 he sold his collection of 1170 specimens to C.F. Drège*.
He was probably related to Brother John Adam Halter, a Protestant missionary of the United Brethren, who arrived at Enon in 1822 and was still there in 1837.
