F.H. Mitchell (or Michell), associate member of the (British) Institution
of Electrical Engineers, was a lecturer in electrotechnics under Professor J.H.
Dobson* at the South African School of Mines and Technology, Johannesburg (later the University of the Witwatersrand) from
about 1910 to 1914. During that time he published the following papers: 'The
measurement of large alternating current e.m.f.'s and power by the Kelvin
balance' (1910), and 'Short discourse to students' (1915) in the Transactions of the South African Institute
of Electrical Engineers; and 'Phenomena connected with the application of
continuous currents to the stator or rotor of a 3-phase induction motor' (Transactions of the South African
Institution of Engineers, 1913).
He is probably the same person as F.H. Michell, the author
of 'Notes on modern electrical machinery' (Transactions
of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers, 1911/2); possibly also the same person as F.H. Michell, assistant engineer stationed at Pretoria, who was called upon to retire from the public service in 1918.
